We get unleash the Impound’s inner hesher this week with cuts from Cinderella, Montrose, the new Krokus and Airbourne albums, and the lead-off joint from Spain’s ’77, one of our favorite new bands.
If you experience playback problems (unfortunately, pretty common with these embeds), pop over to the 8tracks mix page and it should play fine.

Not many modern artists have sketched man’s inhumanity, loneliness and discontent with such strong, clear lines. Elliott Smith’s music is a rare combination of trembling tenderness and cutting insight, delivered without the sentimentality and emotional tiptoeing that often get in the way of real honesty.

Krokus isn’t sophisticated but it is hard rock nourishment. Hell, the song “Rock ‘n’ Roll Handshake” is about an actual handshake and not just a clunky euphemism. It’s endearing to find a band so deeply in love with sweaty, long hair, mainstream (albeit of another era) hard rock.

Shot in Yosemite at last year’s Las Tortugas Festival. Tim Bluhm of The Mother Hips is far from scary. In fact, he’s one mellow, chill guy. But, on this night, amongst the trees of California’s Yosemite Forest, he did his best to freak us out. He succeeded.
Editor’s Note: Tim has an array of hats that would look stupid on almost anyone else. Once encountered few ever forget his iconic fur number, which makes an already ludicrously tall dude even taller. I was also present at Tortugas ’09, but I wasn’t scared by Bluhm’s get-up so much as it made me want to assemble a classic hobo bindle for him — a long, knobby stick with a plaid bandana stuffed with a few worldly possessions. In Tim’s case, I’d guess beer, a sandwich, pictures of Nicki and more beer. (Dennis)
Calling an instrument an extension of a musician’s body is the kind of critic-speak that’s lost any real meaning because it’s so overused. But, sometimes there’s such fluidity between thought, electrical impulses and action that a man-machine merger seems not only plausible but also strangely organic. So it is with Tim Bluhm and Greg Loiacono of The Mother Hips.
The Stone Foxes are one of the niftiest new rock bands to rise up in the Bay Area scene in recent years. Their pleasantly raw, kickass sophomore album Bears & Bulls arrives July 6. Folks living near San Francisco should come down to Cafe Du Nord on July 17th for the Foxes’ hometown album release show. The Impound will be in the house raising a figurative lighter in their honor (gotta honor fire safety laws). In the meantime grab your View-Master and enjoy this exceedingly fun, clever video for the first single. Prepare to clap your fockin’ hands.
