Dr. Dog

Jackie Wants A Black Eye

Comments Off

More from our East Coast man in the field Jake Krolick, who brings us a lil’ bit of heaven from one of our absolute favorites, Dr. Dog. The Philly marvels make rock ‘n’ roll that’s powerful, important, relevant and many other fine things besides. There’s a powerful feeling of community and shared experience at a Dog show, where, as the opening number here, Jackie Wants A Black Eye off their latest release, Shame, Shame, announces, “We’re all in this together now as we all fall apart/ And we’re swapping little pieces of our broken little hearts.”

This is Eli Jebidiah. He sings and plays stringed things in Poor Man’s Whiskey, Guitarmageddon and Allman Brothers tribute group The Allmond Bros Clan. He makes people smile with his music. They might also rage a little depending on what flavor he’s serving up. It’s all good if Kurth is behind it. That’s been our experience at least. This shot was taken on the 4th of July at High Sierra Music Festival. It’s how we’ll be envisioning Uncle Sam in the future.

Lead photographer Josh Miller handpicked his 10 favorite shots from the 2010 High Sierra Music Festival and really captures some of the essence of this very special annual gathering. He’s good like that. If you’re interested in reading more about the festival check out this review, which contains Dennis’ highlights and more pics from Jake Krolick and Susan J. Weiand.

Simon Allen

The New Mastersounds

Our third Free Bird Project inductee is Simon Allen of severely groovy U.K. soul merchants The New Mastersounds. To be a truly funky drummer – and Simon absolutely is that – one must possess a healthy amount of inner “fuck you,” which he demonstrates nicely in this shot.

A double shot from our man in Philadelphia Jake Krolick who scooped out the sweet ‘n’ meaty parts from a recent Heartless Bastards show along with openers The Builders and The Butchers. Krolick has a swell instinct for zeroing in on the unfolding moment, and we’ll be sharing more of his work in the days to come. Further tidbits on the show from Krolick after the videos.

a tasty clip from The Builders and The Butchers and more…

“Nobody but R.E.M. could have made that record,” proudly proclaims Peter Buck in the liner notes to the 25th Anniversary deluxe edition of Athens guitar great’s “personal favorite” in his longtime band’s canon, 1985′s Reconstruction of the Fables (Deluxe Edition released July 13 on IRS/EMI). Produced in London by legendary British rock luminary Joe Boyd, who co-founded the mythical English underground nightspot the UFO Club and helmed records for such names as Fairport Convention, Pink Floyd, Soft Machine and the Incredible String Band, R.E.M.’s third is a dark, cryptic and moody song cycle with experimental sonic textures and psych-folk overtones that evoke a thinking man’s mental tour across the landscape of the rural American South of the band members’ collective youth.
