The Chris Robinson Brotherhood has been traveling around California, playing venues small and smaller as they road test new songs, killer covers, solo material from the Black Crowes frontman and highly promising new material. It’s a classic way to build a band, but Robinson (lead vocals, guitar) seems to get classic moves really well. Joined by Impound All-Star and ace singer-songwriter Neal Casal (guitar, vocals), Black Crowes’ keyboardist Adam MacDougall, former MOFRO drummer George Sluppick and bassist Mark “Muddy” Dutton, Robinson is conjuring up a sound somewhere between the first couple albums by The Band, early Crosby, Stills and Nash offerings, the Fillmore psych of the 1960s and a pinch of country comfort. It’s easy to like but hard to pin down, and certainly different than the Crowes. We’re diggin’ it a bunch (along with the Cali pride shown onstage – that is one big ass flag, sirs!). Curious children can read Dennis’ take on the band’s shows in SF and Oakland last week here, and we’ve got yet more awesome pics from our buddy John Margaretten below. As you’ll see, the band had a fine old time at The Independent, as did most of us in the stalls.
