John Margaretten has an almost tactile knack for capturing the joie de vivre of musicians. His eye and instincts catch those little tells that emerge onstage where we see the real human being inside the performer as they flash upon that thing that drives them to make music and share it with people. Dirty Impound was fortunate to have John on the scene at this year’s Outside Lands festival in Golden Gate Park. Over the next few days we’ll be showcasing his shots from each day, starting with last Friday’s rousing kickoff to what has become one of the premiere festivals in the U.S.

Kyle McDonald from Slightly Stoopid has kindly offered up his talents to The Free Bird Project. Our pal lensman Brad Hodge took this shot on the band’s bus before their performance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre (see more pics from that night here). The band is crossing the country as the headliners for the Seedless Summer Tour along with fellow Southern California bands Rebelution, Shwayze and Cisco. Check out tour dates here.

Michael Monroe

If you’re a fan of Guns N’ Roses and similar hard-edged yet tuneful 80s rock, then you should already know about Hanoi Rocks (and if you aren’t up to speed, the 2-CD compilation This One’s For Rock ‘N’ Roll is fine primer). What’s especially cool these days is how Hanoi’s lead singer Michael Monroe is knocking out killer music as good or even better than his vaunted past. His new album, Sensory Overdrive gets a U.S. release on August 23rd, and this taste makes us wanna scream ‘n’ shout until we hear the whole thing. Monroe and his reportedly ace touring band will hit North America starting September 30 in Philadelphia. We’ve already got their Santa Clara date at The Avalon on October 18 on our calendar, and you can find full dates here.

Pete Shand

The New Mastersounds

Pete Shand by John Margaretten

Feel. That’s what it’s all about with The New Mastersounds’ bassist Pete Shand, who rides in the musculature of the music, wrapped tight around the bones and moving seamlessly & powerfully below the skin. Where many bassists in the funk/jam world pop and strut, drawing attention to themselves, Shand relaxes in the groove, letting his intuitive touch do the talking. When in doubt with TNM, just focus on Shand’s heartbeat and you’ll find the center of it all.

Shand’s kung-fu is on full display on the band’s new album, Breaks From The Border, which hits shelves this past Tuesday. Pete took the time to answer our bass guitar inquiry.

Hottub

4 Lokos Only (Mochipet Remix)

While the super caffeinated alcoholic witch’s brew Four Loko is getting harder to find than a 15-year-old that hasn’t done DVDA (Orgazmo fans will understand), the wild-ass folks of Oakland’s boom-bappin-est party rockers Hottub have lobbed another dance floor gonad grabber into the world. We consider it one of the Impound’s duties to make sure folks know of the warm, wet wonderfulness of Hottub at every turn. Hit play and enjoy a better day.
