They come no more old school Nashville cool than George Jones. His voice is beautifully tarnished gold, a lived-in thing even when young, and starting in the 1970s, the man developed the world’s most astounding sideburns EVER, a follicle rival for Burt Reynolds’ mojo in the same era (and by all reports George was as big a wild man during his drinkin’ & druggin’ days as anyone in that hedonistic decade). George Jones turns 80-years-old next Monday, September 12. Radio station WSM will be celebrating online all-day with Jones classics every hour 12 midnight – 7 p.m., listener birthday greetings and requests throughout the day, and a special edition of “The Eddie Stubbs Show” at 7 pm – midnight featuring nothing but George Jones recordings. We’ll be tuning in, and to get y’all in the right mood here’s some vintage Jones.
