Having one’s preconceptions shaken up is ALWAYS a positive, especially these days when folks are holding on tighter & tighter to inflexible positions on a whole host of matters. While the Impound still has less than no interest in the music of Insane Clown Posse, this wonderful short documentary about their fans captured at the group’s annual Gathering of the Juggalos is a strangely beautiful film, exposing humanity, kindness and a touching sense of community in a place one simply doesn’t expect to find it. Some of the imagery is haunting, other parts joyful, and the interview segments let the ICP Family speak for themselves. Yes, some outsider preconceptions are confirmed – the pregnant gal smoking a cigarette and stroking her belly talking about the next generation of fans isn’t a terrific endorsement for the quality of one’s scene – but most of the behavior on display isn’t even a little bit different than anything seen at Bonnaroo, Coachella or any other major fest – and the vibe amongst participants is much closer to hippie-friendly festies like High Sierra and the Suwanee gatherings. American Juggalo is a fascinating, oddly moving little film and well worth 20 minutes of your time, especially since you may come out the other side of it, like we did, with a fresh, more empathetic attitude towards a group of folks that are easy to write off from a distance. Director Sean Dunne has done something special here, hitting just the right balance of curious observer and compassionate listener, and marking himself as a film talent to watch.
