Free stuff is good, right? Free stuff that IS good is even better. To wit, this grooving rock-meets-electric jazz live set from Humboldt, CA’s Free Rain, which you can listen to and download below. Self-described as “Post-Rock/Analog Funk,” the Impound hears a descendent of the driving vibe that drove Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes, Santana’s collaboration with Buddy Miles, a bit of Tortoise’s funky side, and all lightly spiced with today’s late night hands-in-the-air scene. We hit play and found ourselves shimmying for all nine tracks. Piet Dalmolen of Northern California’s fine classic-meets-modern rockers The Nucleus shreds guitar in this band, and everyone else seems similarly switched on in this Rain. If you’re an instrumental music fan, particularly for stuff that skirts simple genre restrictions, you’re likely to dig this, both the slinky originals and the strut-astic one-two finish of two Stevie Wonder covers – “Too High” and “Living For The City”.
