Josh Miller has a knack for getting bands to relax into their coolness, which he definitely accomplishes in this backstage shot of West Indian Girl taken a few years back at Outside Lands.

DI’s chief photographer Josh Miller has a way of loosening up the rock spirit in bands, particularly in his portrait shots like this cool snap of The Duke Spirit, who return with a new album titled Bruiser on September 27. The band oozes a classic kinda cool and Miller’s lens captures that and their playful nature, too. For more on the band check out this interview.
With this year’s Outside Lands Festival just weeks away, Mr. Miller takes us backstage to 2009′s festivities with the Silversun Pickups. We like how bassist Nikki Monninger appears to be hovering in the air. Neat trick, lensman!
I caught of the Cold War Kids backstage after their blistering inaugural Bonnaroo set. They were tired and exhausted, but paused really quick for this shot.
Les Claypool with giant rubber ducky background worked out for the best. I’m also a fan of the reflection in his sunglasses. The bass master’s hands at work.
This picture of Willie Nelson was taken at Harrah’s Casino, South Lake Tahoe, CA in 2002. My friends and I drove down from North Lake Tahoe to see the legend at work. I brought along an old film camera and was able to get a few choice shots, including this one.
This shot of The Flaming Lips was taken at Bonnaroo 2007 and is one of my favorite “live music photos” I’ve taken….the color, the expression…it really captures what I love most about the live music performance.
And here’s the first new original music from the Lips since their Embryonic album. “Two Blobs Fucking” was released on Monday in honor of Valentine’s Day
This was the second formal band photo I have taken for Big Light. I brought lighting and all the bells and whistles I thought I needed to The Independent this past August. For this shot, it turns out I didn’t need any of it, besides my camera, of course. The photo was taken on top of the venue. It was a great way to start the evening and the grand reopening of The Independent after the room’s remodel.
