Sunday Brunch VII

Waking from a dream, we find the world as we left it, a muddle of bills, plans and missteps. The panic patter begins in our chest and our still drowsy brain sloshes to attention. Take a breath, push this rising stress aside. Know you are doing just fine. Someone and perhaps more someones than you realize think you are beautiful and cool and lots of other good things. Let that take the place of the panic. See if you can make this Sunday bright for you and don’t be surprised if your residual glow doesn’t make others shine a bit too.

Classic Rock Orgy VI

From time to time DI feels the need to pimp slap the lazy programming of commercial classic rock radio by using the same artist pool but carefully avoiding the same predictable tracks. Sure, we throw in a few obscure treats – once a record store clerk always a record store clerk – but this is exactly what the FM pioneers did back in the day, doing the legwork to bring the coolest sounds to the people.

This installment doesn’t spare the Rod with double shots from The Faces and Stewart’s 70s heyday. There’s a couple artists that should be staples on the format but aren’t (Goose Creek Symphony, The Flamin’ Groovies), a super bad Neil Young cover, Ted Nugent before he went nuts (with young Meatloaf singing!), a stealth reading of “Amazing Grace,” and even a Journey power ballad. Now, to borrow a line from the saucy James Taylor nugget here, it’s time to whisper sweet nothings in your filthy ears until you’re satisfied.

Brought To You By The Letter…F

Comments Off

The Impound has been organizing its music archives, and we hit upon the idea of sharing tunes we dig in an alphabetical way. So, for the next few months we’ll be working our way from A-Z with a choice baker’s dozen or so installment each week that includes bands/artists from a single letter.

Our “F” assortment includes DI staples Dan Fogelberg, Fleetwood Mac and Fairport Convention alongside some artists that deserve bigger audiences and critical recognition (The Features, Johnny Flynn and Liam Finn) as well as a monster track from one of our fave-o-rite cult U.K. acts (“Good News Bad News”) named Family. If just one listener decides to explore the Family catalog because of this mix we feel we’re doing God’s work here at the Impound (and you might well start with the killer 2 CD compilation In Their Own Time if you feel so inclined). Now, we’ll shut the “F” up and get rolling…

Uh, we were going to show you a nice picture of Furry Friends with a Fabulous Letter “F” but the Sesame Street gang is still pissed about Romney saying he’s pulling their funding. Looks like it’s gonna be a street fight with the GOP!

Sunday Brunch IV

Melancholy goes down well in the morning. It’s a great time to think over what might have been and what will be while sipping a hot beverage and watching the weather unfold. With that in mind, DI’s consciously gentle morning soundtrack for February digs deep into the treasure trove of bittersweeties out there, particularly in the 1970s when they knew how to get their introspection on proper.

Indulging a classic rock jones this week with an assemblage designed to make you feel like you’re tooling down a sunlit highway in an American muscle car, a warm hand on your thigh with comely good times grinning at you from the passenger seat. But first, a dirty blues rumble from our favorite Johnny Otis obscurity…

Since things are gonna be a little quiet around the Impound for the next few days, we thought we’d leave you with a big, fat bit of rockin’ & rollin’ to keep you busy until we return from our travels. You know what? This kinda music will help you get outta bed in the morning…if you play it loud enough and don’t resist when your body starts to wiggle. We begin with two from the streetwise pen of Mr. Ian Hunter…

Hot Melodic Rock Injection!

Comments Off

There’s something so forthright about Melodic Rock. By nature, it’s sincere, boldly drawn and designed with a mass audience in mind. Love, God and the travails of stardom are all treated with equal gravitas (and oh SUCH gravitas…). It’s perfect for singing along and may just lift you out of the doldrums if you embrace it without fear of getting cheese all over yourself. You can usually get the stains out later.

This assortment begins with a new one from Journey, and since we gave Jonathan Cain the business in our review of Journey’s latest, we’ve included two of his best compositions (Turn Around In Tokyo and Faithfully). There’s a few curves beyond the familiar names to keep things interesting – a gently tweaked Elton John cover from Tortoise & Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and a couple bands likely unfamiliar to anyone not a record collector from the U.K. (Stray, Mother Earth). Let us know what you think and maybe we’ll offer future installments. Now bend over. This won’t hurt a bit…
